From a software that provides travel site-like services in 1996 to the idea of making it an individual website to serve customers with more travel-related needs in 1999, it was bought by TicketMaster (USA Networks now) in 2001 from Microsoft. The first CEO of the newly-born online travel agency originated the name of Expedia from the words “exploration” and “speed,” and contains the high-point scrabble letter “X.”
How does Expedia Work?
Expedia is another America-based travel site world-renowned as one of the biggest online travel agencies, together with FlightHub, Kayak, Skyscanner, and JustFly. Basically, Expedia is just like other travel sites wherein travellers can book flights, hotel reservations, car rental services, cruises, activities (things to do), and even bundle deals. These services are done by the regular search-and-compare method of all online travel agencies.
Marketing is also an important factor Expedia takes into account. All online travel agencies, not only Expedia, should keep up with the latest changes in online marketing and promotions. The primary reason for marketing is of course keeping things interesting enough for the customers to build trust toward Expedia.
Expedia+ is the travel site’s membership program where travellers will have exclusive access to their special offers. As customers book with them, the more Expedia+ points travellers may earn which can be used as discounts and other travel benefits with Expedia.
On their mobile app, it is stated that travellers can save up to 40% with mobile-exclusive hotel deals for tonight, or any night. Consumers can search, compare, and book while earning triple Expedia+ points. Customers can also receive notifications of their trip details, map directions, and flight alerts if using an Apple device (iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch).

Unfortunately, Expedia is not your Superman in travel necessities. Based on 1,097 Expedia reviews, the travel site had gathered an overall score rating of 0.4/10 rating on TrustPilot, which is obviously not a good impression to anyone planning to use Expedia. I was actually having high hopes that the travel site will at least get an almost-perfect score, but I think I only ever expected. Well, what’s worse is some customers even posted videos as reference to their complaints and negative feedback towards Expedia.

It might have been that Expedia was one of the leading travel sites, but I guess they were too fond of themselves. They even started using their fame to lure people to book with them, and to take their money, without an equal or right reservation. I wonder why such a travel site changed in a short period of time. It is like they are wasting all their efforts into nothing. Beware of this kind of online travel agency. Stay away from Expedia!
